Quick reference for classical Vedic Jyotish

⚠ This reference is compiled from classical Vedic Jyotish texts for educational and spiritual guidance purposes. Planetary strength in a natal chart depends on many overlapping factors — dignity, house placement, aspects, yogas, and the overall chart context. Use this as a learning guide, not a standalone judgment tool.

Planet × House Strength

General strength of each planet by house placement. Based on Digbala, Marana Karaka Sthana, natural significations, and Upachaya principles. Individual chart context always modifies results.

MKS = Marana Karaka Sthana — the house where the planet is considered at its weakest by classical texts. Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) improve with time for malefics. Lagna strength always modifies house results.

Grah Maitri — Planetary Friendship

Planetary relationships (maitri) determine how well two planets co-operate in a chart. Natural friendship (Naisargika) is permanent and inherent; temporary friendship (Tatkalika) is derived from chart positions. Combined, they produce the five-fold Panchadha Maitri — the most refined measure of inter-planetary rapport.

Naisargika Maitri — Natural Planetary Friendship Matrix

Each row shows how that planet views every other planet. Friendship is not always reciprocal — Mercury treats Moon as an enemy, yet Moon treats Mercury as a friend.

M — Mitra (Friend) S — Sama (Neutral) E — Shatru (Enemy)

Source: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Ch. 3. Rahu and Ketu relationships vary across classical texts and are omitted from this matrix; they generally behave like the planet they conjoin and are treated as natural malefics.

Tatkalika Maitri — Temporary (Chart-Based) Friendship

From any planet's position in the natal chart, planets placed in houses 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12 from it are Tatkalika Mitra (temporary friends). Planets in houses 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 from it are Tatkalika Shatru (temporary enemies). This is computed separately for each birth chart and changes from chart to chart.

Panchadha Maitri — Five-fold Planetary Relationship

Combining Naisargika and Tatkalika maitri gives five distinct relationship grades. This refined measure is used in Shadbala calculations and for assessing how effectively two planets support each other's results.

Naisargika (Natural) Tatkalika (Temporary) Panchadha Result Effect in the Chart
Mitra (Friend) Mitra (Friend) Adhi Mitra ★ Great Friend — strongest cooperative bond; planets fully support each other's significations
Mitra (Friend) Shatru (Enemy) Sama (Neutral) Neutral — natural affinity is offset by chart-position conflict; mixed results
Sama (Neutral) Mitra (Friend) Mitra (Friend) Friend — a naturally neutral planet becomes supportive due to chart proximity
Sama (Neutral) Shatru (Enemy) Shatru (Enemy) Enemy — chart-position turns a neutral planet adversarial
Shatru (Enemy) Mitra (Friend) Sama (Neutral) Neutral — natural enmity is softened by chart-based closeness; tension reduced
Shatru (Enemy) Shatru (Enemy) Adhi Shatru ★ Great Enemy — maximum conflict; mutual obstruction of each other's portfolios

★ Adhi Mitra and Adhi Shatru are the two extremes. The five grades in order of decreasing harmony: Adhi Mitra → Mitra → Sama → Shatru → Adhi Shatru. Used in Shadbala (six-fold strength), yoga assessment, and timing of results through dashas.

Shadbala — Six-fold Planetary Strength

Shadbala (शड्बल) is the classical Jyotish system for quantifying how strong a planet is in a given birth chart. Described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, it combines six independent strength components into a single score measured in Rupas (1 Rupa = 60 Virupas). A planet meeting or exceeding its minimum Rupa threshold is considered capable of fully delivering its significations.

The Six Shadbala Components

# Bala (Strength) Sanskrit What It Measures Max (Virupas)
1 Positional Strength Sthana Bala Dignity in signs and divisional charts — exaltation, own sign, friendly sign, house position, odd/even placement ~560
2 Directional Strength Dig Bala Power gained by occupying the house matching the planet's preferred direction (10th, 4th, 1st, or 7th) 60
3 Temporal Strength Kala Bala Strength from the time of birth — day/night, lunar phase, weekday, planetary hour, ayana, and planetary wars ~480+
4 Motional Strength Chesta Bala Speed and motion state — retrograde planets are strongest; stationary and slow direct are weaker 60
5 Natural Strength Naisargika Bala Fixed inherent strength assigned to each planet by nature — does not change from chart to chart 60 (Sun)
6 Aspectual Strength Drik Bala Net strength gained or lost from aspects received — benefic aspects add Virupas, malefic aspects subtract Variable

Sthana Bala — Five Sub-components

Sub-component Rule Max (Virupas)
Uccha Bala Distance from exact debilitation point ÷ 3. At exact exaltation = 60 Virupas; at exact debilitation = 0. Interpolated linearly between the two. 60
Sapta Vargaja Bala Dignity score summed across 7 divisional charts (D1, D2, D3, D7, D9, D12, D30). Exaltation in a varga scores highest; enemy sign scores lowest. Panchadha Maitri determines friend/enemy status per varga. ~420
Ojayugma Rasyamsa Bala Odd-natured planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter) gain 15 Virupas each in odd rashis and odd navamsas. Even-natured planets (Moon, Venus, Saturn) gain 15 each in even rashis and navamsas. Mercury gains in both. (Max 30 per planet.) 30
Kendradi Bala Based on house type: Kendra (1/4/7/10) = 60 · Panaphara (2/5/8/11) = 30 · Apoklima (3/6/9/12) = 15 Virupas 60
Drekkana Bala Male planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter) in 1st Drekkana: 15 Virupas. Female planets (Moon, Venus) in 3rd Drekkana: 15. Neuter planets (Mercury, Saturn) in 2nd Drekkana: 15. 15

Sapta Vargaja Bala dignity scores (Virupas per varga): Exaltation 20 · Moolatrikona 18 · Own Sign 15 · Great Friend's sign 12 · Friend's sign 8 · Neutral's sign 4 · Enemy's sign 2 · Great Enemy's sign 1. See Grah Maitri for Panchadha friendship grades.

Dig Bala — Directional Strength

Each planet reaches full Dig Bala (60 Virupas) at its power house and zero at the opposite house. Strength interpolates linearly with angular distance from the zero-point. Formula: Dig Bala = (degrees from weakest house) × (60 / 180).

Graha Peak House (60 Virupas) Zero-point House (0 Virupas) Direction

♀ Venus4th10thNorth
☿ Mercury1st (Lagna)7thEast
♃ Jupiter1st (Lagna)7thEast
♄ Saturn7th1stWest

Kala Bala — Nine Temporal Sub-components

Sub-component Rule Virupas (winner)
Nathonnatha Bala Day planets (Sun, Jupiter, Venus) gain during daytime. Night planets (Moon, Mars, Saturn) gain during nighttime. Mercury gains at all times (30 constant). 60 / 0
Paksha Bala Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, Mercury) gain during Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight); natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn, waning Moon) gain during Krishna Paksha. Based on Moon–Sun elongation. 0–60 (graded)
Tribhaga Bala Daytime divided into 3 equal thirds; Mercury rules 1st third, Sun 2nd, Saturn 3rd. Nighttime: Moon 1st, Venus 2nd, Mars 3rd. Jupiter gains at sunrise and sunset. 60
Abda Bala Planet ruling the birth year (weekday lord of the year's starting Sunday) gains this strength. 15
Masa Bala Planet ruling the birth month (lord of the weekday on which the lunar month began). 30
Vara Bala Planet ruling the weekday of birth (Sun→Sunday, Moon→Monday, Mars→Tuesday, etc.). 45
Hora Bala Planet ruling the planetary hour (Hora) at the time of birth. Each hour is ruled by a planet in Chaldean order. 60
Ayana Bala Based on the planet's declination relative to the celestial equator. Planets in their preferred hemisphere (north for northern grahas, south for southern) gain strength. 0–60 (graded)
Yuddha Bala Planetary war (Graha Yuddha): when two planets (excluding Sun/Moon) are within 1° of each other, the planet with the higher degree wins. Winner absorbs the loser's Shadbala Virupas. Variable

Chesta Bala — Motional Strength

Chesta Bala measures a planet's speed and motion state. Retrograde planets are considered most powerful since they appear to exert maximum effort to stand still. For Sun and Moon (which never retrograde), Chesta Bala equals their Uccha Bala.

Motion State Sanskrit Description Virupas
RetrogradeVakriPlanet moving backward — maximum apparent effort60
Direct (fast, toward exaltation)CharaDirect motion, moving from debilitation toward exaltation45
About to turn retrograde or directAnuvakriVery slow, on the cusp of station — near peak30
Average speedSamaMoving at normal mean speed7.5
Slow (toward debilitation)MandaSlower than average, heading toward debilitation point15
Slower than averageMandatarSignificantly below mean daily motion15

Naisargika Bala — Fixed Natural Strength

These values are constant across all charts — they represent the inherent luminosity and cosmic significance of each planet. Sun (the source of all light) is strongest; Saturn (the slowest and most distant classical planet) is weakest.

Graha Virupas Rupas Relative Standing
☀ Sun60.001.000Strongest
☽ Moon51.430.8572nd
♀ Venus42.860.7143rd
♃ Jupiter34.290.5714th
☿ Mercury25.710.4295th
♂ Mars17.140.2866th
♄ Saturn8.570.143Weakest

Values are 60 ÷ 7 × n where n = 7 for Sun down to 1 for Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not assigned Naisargika Bala in classical Shadbala.

Minimum Required Shadbala (Rupa Threshold)

A planet scoring above its threshold is Balavan (strong) — capable of fully delivering its significations during its dasha. A planet below threshold is Durbala (weak) — its results will be delayed, partial, or frustrated.

Graha Minimum Rupas Minimum Virupas Significance
☀ Sun6.5390Authority, health, career; weak Sun → lack of confidence or paternal issues
☽ Moon6.0360Mind, emotions, mother; weak Moon → mental instability or lack of peace
♂ Mars5.0300Energy, siblings, property; weak Mars → low drive, injury, or sibling troubles
☿ Mercury7.0420Intelligence, speech; weak Mercury → communication issues or learning difficulties
♃ Jupiter6.5390Wisdom, dharma, children; weak Jupiter → poor judgment or lack of blessings
♀ Venus5.5330Relationships, wealth; weak Venus → marital friction or financial struggle
♄ Saturn5.0300Longevity, karma, discipline; weak Saturn → lack of endurance or karmic setbacks

Mercury has the highest threshold (7.0 Rupas) because precise communication and discrimination require finer balance. Mars and Saturn have the lowest (5.0 Rupas) because natural malefics are inherently forceful even at lower strength.

Ishta Phala & Kashta Phala

Derived from Uccha Bala and Chesta Bala, these two scores measure the directional quality of a planet's strength — how much of it is beneficial vs. painful.

Ishta Phala — Auspicious Potential
√ (Uccha Bala × Chesta Bala)
Range: 0–60. High Ishta = planet readily bestows good results — prosperity, recognition, fulfillment — during its dasha/antardasha period.
Kashta Phala — Painful Potential
√ ((60 − Uccha) × (60 − Chesta))
Range: 0–60. High Kashta = planet delivers its results through difficulty, obstruction, or suffering. High Kashta + low Ishta = chronic struggle in that planet's domain.

Both Uccha Bala and Chesta Bala are on a 0–60 Virupa scale. A debilitated retrograde planet (high Chesta, zero Uccha) will have moderate Ishta and moderate Kashta — results come but with effort. An exalted direct planet near mean speed scores well on Uccha but low on Chesta — the gift is there but the timing is slow.

Drik Bala — Aspectual Strength

For each planet aspecting the target planet, a fraction of 60 Virupas is added (benefic aspect) or subtracted (malefic aspect) based on aspect strength: full aspect = ±60 · ¾ aspect = ±45 · ½ aspect = ±30 · ¼ aspect = ±15 Virupas. The sum is divided by 4 to give the final Drik Bala value. Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, Mercury) contribute positive Drik Bala; natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, waning Moon) contribute negative. A positive total means the planet receives more support than affliction from planetary aspects.

Reading Shadbala Results

Shadbala Score Grade Interpretation
≥ 1.5× minimumExceptionally Strong (Ati Balavan)Planet operates at peak — significations manifest early, abundantly, and with ease during its periods
≥ minimum requiredStrong (Balavan)Planet can deliver its results reliably; dashas of this planet tend to be constructive
80–100% of minimumModerateMixed results — some significations manifest but with effort; context of dasha lord and dispositor matters greatly
< 80% of minimumWeak (Durbala)Planet struggles to manifest its significations; results are delayed, partial, or come through difficulty

Shadbala gives a comprehensive but not absolute verdict. A technically weak planet can still produce results if it forms a powerful yoga, occupies its own sign, or receives aspect from a strong benefic. Shadbala is most reliable when combined with Ashtakavarga, dasha timing, and overall chart context.

Kundli Interpretation — Step-by-Step

A classical framework for reading a Vedic birth chart — from identifying the ascendant through dasha timing and gochara triggers. Follow each step in sequence; use the other reference sections alongside this guide.

1
Natal Chart Potential
What can happen?
Steps 1 – 9
2
Dasha Timing
When can it manifest?
Steps 10 – 11
3
Gochara Trigger
What activates it now?
Step 12

⟳ All three layers must align for a significant life event to manifest. Natal potential without a supportive Dasha remains latent; a strong Dasha without a matching Gochara rarely times events precisely.

Step Focus Area What to Examine Key Interpretive Question
1 Lagna (Ascendant) The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. Sets the entire house framework. Note the sign and which planet rules it. How strong is the native's overall life force, physical constitution, and sense of self?
2 Lagna Lord The ruling planet of the rising sign. Check its dignity (exalted/own/enemy/debilitated), the house it occupies, and any conjunctions or aspects it receives. Does the Lagna lord empower the native's life path or create friction and obstacles?
3 Moon (Chandra) Sign, nakshatra, pada, and house placement. Note Paksha (Shukla — waxing, stronger; Krishna — waning, subtler). Check all aspects to the Moon. Where does the mind dwell? Is the emotional self nourished and supported or challenged?
4 Sun (Surya) Sign (dignity), house placement. Sun reveals vitality, father, authority, and the soul's core direction. Combust planets near the Sun lose independent strength. Where does the native seek recognition and authority? Is the soul's purpose clear and supported?
5 Planetary Dignities List all exalted (uccha), own-sign (swakshetra), and debilitated (neecha) planets. Check for Neecha Bhanga — conditions that cancel debilitation and produce unusual strength. Which planets deliver their full promise? Which are compromised and cannot fully give results?
6 House Occupation List all 12 houses noting which contain planets. Occupied houses are directly energised. Empty houses are read entirely through their lord's placement elsewhere. Which life areas are directly activated? Which depend on their lord's position in another house?
7 House Lord Placements For each house, identify its ruling planet and where it sits. Count the distance from the house to its lord — kendra and trikona placements are strong; 6th, 8th, 12th are problematic. How are the 12 life areas interconnected? Which houses support each other and which create difficulty?
8 Aspects (Drishti) All planets fully aspect the 7th house from themselves. Mars also aspects 4th and 8th; Jupiter aspects 5th and 9th; Saturn aspects 3rd and 10th. Benefic aspects strengthen; malefic aspects challenge. What planetary energies reach each house from a distance? Are those influences broadly supportive or challenging?
9 Yogas Identify Raj Yoga (kendra lord + trikona lord conjunct/mutually aspecting), Dhana Yoga (2nd/11th lords strong), Viparita Raja Yoga (6/8/12 lords in those houses), Gajakesari, and doshas (Mangal Dosha, Kal Sarp). Do special planetary combinations significantly elevate, protect, or challenge the native beyond ordinary results?
10 Mahadasha Vimshottari Dasha — a 120-year cycle based on the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Identify the current Mahadasha lord. Read its natal dignity, house, aspects, and lordship in the birth chart. What is the dominant theme of this planetary period? What areas of life can the Mahadasha lord activate or suppress?
11 Antardasha (Sub-period) Each Mahadasha divides into 9 Antardashas, each ruled by a different planet. Read the Antardasha lord's natal placement and its relationship to the Mahadasha lord (friend, neutral, or enemy). What sub-theme is currently running? Does the Antardasha lord cooperate with or strain the Mahadasha?
12 Gochara (Current Transits) Always read transits from the natal Moon sign. Jupiter transit signals opportunity and expansion for the year. Saturn transit (incl. Sade Sati) reveals where karmic work is required. Rahu/Ketu axis shows the current evolutionary pressure. What current planetary environment is triggering or suppressing the natal potential? Does Gochara confirm what the Dasha indicates?

House Lord Placement — Quick Reference

Count from the house in question to the house where its lord sits. This interval (called Bhavesh placement) determines how that life area operates in the chart.

Lord sits in (counted from the house) House Category Effect on That Life Area
Same house (1st from itself)Own HouseVery strong — the house fully sustains itself. Direct, clear, and reliable results in that life area with little interference.
4th or 7th from itselfKendraStable angular support. The life area is visible, well-structured, and produces consistent results over time.
5th or 9th from itselfTrikonaAuspicious and fortunate. The life area benefits from natural grace, past-life merit, and dharmic support.
2nd from itselfDhana SthanaConnected to resources and accumulation. The life area links to wealth and family; financial dimension is prominent.
11th from itselfUpachayaGains and network. Results improve significantly over time; the life area connects to income and collective support.
3rd or 6th from itselfUpachayaEffortful growth. Initial struggle, competition, or delay gradually gives way to increasing results through sustained effort.
8th from itselfDusthanaDisruptions, hidden obstacles, or transformation. Results in that life area come through upheaval or are delayed and uncertain.
12th from itselfDusthanaLoss, separation, or dissolution. The house's energy drains away — effort in that area often leads to expenditure without matching return.

Natural Karakas — Planet Significators at a Glance

Each planet naturally represents certain people and life themes regardless of house. When reading a life area, always check both the house lord and the natural karaka for that theme.

Synthesis — Five Rules Before Drawing a Conclusion

Confirm the natal promise first. A life event must be indicated in the birth chart before Dasha or Gochara can deliver it. If the 7th house, its lord, and Venus (karaka for relationships) are all compromised, no transit can produce a joyful marriage — only the timing and quality of difficulty changes.
Look for three independent confirmations. A result is reliable when multiple chart factors point to the same conclusion — e.g. a strong 5th house, Jupiter (karaka for children) well placed, and the Saptamsha (D7) supporting it. One indicator alone is insufficient.
Assess the Dasha lord's own natal strength. The Mahadasha lord can only give results it promises in the natal chart. A debilitated Dasha lord in the 8th house cannot deliver Raja Yoga results even if a powerful yoga exists elsewhere in the chart.
Require Gochara confirmation for event timing. Use Jupiter transit for identifying opportunity windows; Saturn transit for karmic maturation and restructuring; Rahu/Ketu transits for sudden, destabilising changes. Events rarely manifest without a matching Gochara activation coinciding with a supportive Dasha period.
Check the relevant divisional chart. D9 (Navamsa) for marriage, dharma, and the soul's deeper strength; D10 (Dashamsha) for career and public life; D4 (Chaturthamsha) for property and home; D7 (Saptamsha) for children. The birth chart (D1) shows the potential; the divisional chart confirms whether it fully manifests.

Key Jyotish Terms (Glossary)

Essential Sanskrit terms used throughout Vedic astrology and in AstroJyotisha reports.

Term Meaning
AyanamshaThe degree difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiac. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha is the Indian standard, used by AstroJyotisha. Currently ~24°.
LagnaThe Ascendant — the rising sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Sets the house system and is the most personal point in the chart.
GrahaPlanet. Literally "that which seizes" — grahas influence and shape human experience.
BhavaHouse in the birth chart. There are 12 bhavas, each governing a specific domain of life.
RashiZodiac sign. There are 12 rashis, each 30° of the 360° zodiac.
NakshatraLunar mansion. The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20' each, based on the Moon's daily journey.
Uccha (Exaltation)The sign in which a planet operates at peak strength. A planet at its exact exaltation degree is considered fully empowered.
Neecha (Debilitation)The sign exactly opposite exaltation — where a planet is weakest. Challenges and afflictions from that planet's significations are more likely.
MoolatrikonaA specific portion of a planet's own sign where it operates at high strength — slightly below exaltation but above general own-sign strength.
VargottamaA planet occupying the same sign in both D1 (Rashi) and D9 (Navamsa). Considered exceptionally strong and stable in its significations.
DigbalaDirectional strength. Each planet gains maximum directional power in one specific house: Sun/Mars in 10th, Moon/Venus in 4th, Mercury/Jupiter in 1st, Saturn in 7th.
Marana Karaka SthanaThe "death-causing house" for a planet — the house where it is most severely weakened by classical rules.
Asta (Combust)When a planet comes within a certain degree of the Sun, it is said to be combust — its independence and significations are diminished. The planet "burns" in the Sun's rays.
Vakri (Retrograde)A planet appearing to move backward in the sky. Retrograde energy is intensified, internalized, and often delayed in external expression. It can indicate revisiting themes from the past.
YogaA specific planetary combination that produces a defined effect — either beneficial (Raja, Dhana) or challenging (Dosha). Hundreds of yogas are described in classical texts.
KendraAngular houses: 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th. Called the pillars of the chart — planets here are especially visible and powerful.
TrikonaTrinal houses: 1st, 5th, 9th. Houses of dharma and fortune — the most auspicious houses in the chart.
DusthanaDifficult houses: 6th, 8th, 12th. Houses of obstacles, transformation, loss, and liberation. Malefics here can harm their significations but also build resilience.
UpachayaGrowth houses: 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th. These houses improve over time — malefics placed here often strengthen with age and effort.
AtmakarakaThe planet with the highest degree in the natal chart (ignoring Rahu/Ketu). It represents the soul's primary lesson and desire in this lifetime.
YogakarakaA planet that simultaneously lords both a Kendra and a Trikona for a given Lagna. A powerful producer of Raja Yoga — the single most beneficial planet for that ascendant.
Neecha BhangaCancellation of debilitation. When specific conditions (sign lord or exaltation lord in Kendra, etc.) offset a planet's weakness — the resulting strength can be unusually potent.
DashaPlanetary period. Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used system — a 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods based on the Moon's Nakshatra at birth.
AntardashaSub-period within a Mahadasha. Each Mahadasha is divided into 9 antardashas, each ruled by a different planet, refining the timing of events.
Sade SatiSaturn's ~7.5-year transit through the sign before, the sign of, and the sign after the natal Moon. A period of significant life lessons, restructuring, and inner growth.
GocharaTransit — the current movement of planets through the sky in relation to the natal chart. Used for timing events alongside the Dasha system.
DoshaA planetary affliction or flaw in the chart. Mangal Dosha (Mars in certain houses) and Kal Sarp Dosha (all planets between Rahu-Ketu) are among the most commonly referenced.
KarakaSignificator. Each planet is a natural karaka for certain life themes — Jupiter for wisdom and children, Venus for relationships, Saturn for discipline and longevity, etc.
Navamsa (D9)The 9th divisional chart — 1/9th of each sign. The most important divisional after D1. Used for marriage, dharma, and assessing the true inner strength of planets.
