The 27 Nakshatras — Complete Vedic Guide

In Vedic astrology, the 27 Nakshatras divide the zodiac into lunar mansions of 13°20′ each. Unlike the 12 Rashis (solar signs), Nakshatras are lunar in nature and offer a far more precise and nuanced picture of personality, destiny and karmic path.

What is a Nakshatra?

The word Nakshatra comes from Sanskrit: "naksha" (map) + "tara" (star). Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine Grahas, presided over by a specific deity, and associated with a symbol, quality and elemental nature. The Moon transits one Nakshatra approximately every day, completing the full cycle in 27 days.

The Three Ganas

Nakshatras are divided into three Ganas (temperaments): Deva (divine — gentle, spiritual, harmonious), Manushya (human — balanced, practical, goal-oriented) and Rakshasa (fierce — intense, transformative, powerful). Gana compatibility is a key factor in Vedic marriage matching.
