Ghatasthapana
Ghatasthapana ("establishing the pot") is the foundational ritual that opens Navratri on Pratipada, the first day. Before any of the nine Devi forms are worshipped day by day, the kalash is installed as a seat for the Divine Mother's presence, her image or murti is invoked beside it, and — for those observing it — the akhand jyot is lit to burn continuously through all nine nights. This page covers that complete opening sequence on its own; once it is done, Day 1's own page carries on with that day's pooja to Maa Shailputri.

📿 Step-by-Step Vidhi
Begin with achaman: take a small spoonful of water in your right palm three times and sip it, reciting the three names below, purifying body and mind before the ritual begins. Then sit facing east or north, take water, akshat and a flower in your right hand, and take a sankalp — a brief spoken intention naming today's date, the purpose (Navratri vrat and Ghatasthapana), and your resolve to worship the Devi for the nine days ahead. Let the water fall onto a plate or the ground as you finish, sealing the intention.
Before any major pooja begins, Ganpati is worshipped first as Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles) — this precedes even the kalash itself. A small Ganpati murti, or simply a supari placed and invoked as Ganpati, is offered roli, akshat, a flower, a diya and a short prayer for the smooth, obstacle-free completion of the nine days ahead. The well-known Vakratunda shloka below is the fuller, more commonly recited verse for this moment, alongside the simple beej (seed) mantra.
Before touching or disturbing the earth in the tray, many traditions pause to seek forgiveness of Prithvi Mata (Mother Earth) with the verse below. Then spread the clean soil evenly in the tray and sow the jau (or saptadhanya) seeds into it, sprinkling a little water. This is Jawara Sthapna — the tray is kept beside or beneath the kalash and watered daily through the nine days; the sprouting shoots (jawara) by Navami are themselves regarded as a blessing, distributed to family and friends and offered to the Devi on the closing day.
If using the chalk/rice-flour/turmeric, first draw a small swastik or an ashtadal (eight-petal lotus) on the ground or chowki where the kalash will sit — the seat the kalash itself is installed upon. Fill the kalash with water (Ganga jal if available, mixed into plain water is fine), and drop in akshat and a coin. Arrange five mango or ashok leaves around the rim, facing outward. Place a whole coconut, wrapped in red cloth with its tuft upward, on top of the leaves. Tie moli around the kalash's neck. Set the completed kalash on its drawn seat, on or beside the tray of sown jau, and invoke the sacred rivers and waters of India into it with the first verse below — followed by the second, which invokes the full pantheon (Vishnu, Rudra, Brahma, the seven seas and all sacred waters) as residing within the kalash itself, the classical basis for treating the kalash as a seat of the divine for the nine days.
Place the Durga/Devi murti or image on its decorated chowki, beside or just behind the kalash, facing the family. Offer roli, kumkum, haldi, chandan and akshat, then fresh flowers and the mala. Invoke the Devi's presence with folded hands using the dhyan shloka below, inviting her to reside in the home for the nine nights ahead — followed by the second verse, one of the most widely recited Devi stutis, offered here as a pranam (salutation) to mark the invocation complete.
If you are keeping an akhand jyot (a lamp kept burning without interruption for all nine nights), light it now beside the kalash and Devi, using ghee or til oil with a cotton wick, reciting the deepa-jyoti verse below as it catches flame. Keep enough oil/ghee and a windproof covering nearby so it does not go out, and check on it through each day — many families also keep a second, backup diya ready in case the first ever gutters. This is a personal vrat, not a requirement — if continuous care isn't practical for your household, a regular diya lit fresh each morning and evening is equally accepted; what matters is the devotion behind it, not the particular form the lamp takes.
Conclude Ghatasthapana with a short arti to the kalash and Devi together, offering camphor and ringing the bell/shankh, closing with the verse below — one of the most familiar Devi pranam verses, drawn from the Devi Mahatmyam and recited at the close of worship across many traditions. Distribute a little prasad if you have any ready. With the kalash, Devi and (if observed) the akhand jyot now all established, Day 1's own pooja to Maa Shailputri follows directly — open the Day 1 page to continue, or the full 9-day overview to see what each following day holds.
