🌺 Day 1 — शैलपुत्री (Shailputri)
पर्वतराज हिमालय की पुत्री — नन्दी बैल पर सवार, एक हाथ में त्रिशूल और दूसरे में कमल धारण किए। नवरात्रि का प्रथम स्वरूप, जिनकी आराधना कलश स्थापना के साथ की जाती है।
The daughter of Himavan, king of the mountains — riding the bull Nandi, holding a trishul in one hand and a lotus in the other. She is the first form Navratri opens with, and the form worshipped while the kalash itself is installed on this day.
🛕 Samagri (Materials Needed)
- सजी चौकी पर लाल वस्त्र सहित दुर्गा/देवी की प्रतिमा या चित्र — Durga/Devi image or murti on a decorated chowki with red cloth
- दीपक (घी या तिल तेल), रुई की बत्ती, धूप और कपूर — Diya (ghee or til oil), cotton wicks, dhoop and camphor
- रोली, कुमकुम, हल्दी, चन्दन और अक्षत (चावल) — Roli, kumkum, haldi, chandan and akshat (rice)
- ताज़े पुष्प (विशेषतः लाल), माला और बिल्व/अशोक पत्ते — Fresh flowers (preferably red), mala and bilva/ashok leaves
- आज का भोग: शुद्ध देशी घी — Today's bhog: pure desi ghee
- फल और मिश्री प्रसाद — Fruits and mishri prasad
- आरती थाली, घंटी और शंख — Aarti thali, ghanti (bell) and shankh
- देवी हेतु लाल चुनरी — Red chunri for the Devi
- जौ बोने हेतु मिट्टी की ट्रे सहित मिट्टी का कलश (घट) — Mitti ka kalash (earthen pot) with a small tray of clean soil for jau (barley) sowing
- सप्तधान्य या जौ के बीज — Saptadhanya or jau (barley) seeds
- गंगाजल (या स्वच्छ जल), आम/अशोक के पत्ते, साबुत नारियल, मौली/कलावा, सुपारी, एक सिक्का — Ganga jal (or clean water), aam/ashok leaves, whole coconut, moli/kalava, supari, a coin
- अखण्ड ज्योति (दीपक) घी या तिल तेल सहित, यदि नौ रातें रखनी हों — Akhand jyot (diya) with ghee or til oil, if you are keeping one for all nine nights
📿 Step-by-Step Vidhi
माँ शैलपुत्री की पूजा आरंभ करने से पूर्व कलश स्थापना करें: मिट्टी की ट्रे में जौ/सप्तधान्य के बीज बोएं, जल से भरा कलश उसके समीप या ऊपर रखें, कलश के मुख पर आम के पत्ते सजाएं और ऊपर साबुत नारियल (लाल वस्त्र में लिपटा) रखें, कलश के गले में मौली बांधें, तथा गंगा व समस्त पवित्र जल का आवाहन करें। यदि नौ रातों हेतु अखण्ड ज्योति रखनी हो तो अब प्रज्वलित करें और नवमी तक अखण्ड रखें।
Before Maa Shailputri's pooja begins, install the kalash: sow the jau/saptadhanya seeds in the tray of soil, place the water-filled kalash beside or over it with mango leaves arranged at the rim and a whole coconut (wrapped in a red cloth) set on top, tie moli around the neck of the kalash, and invoke Ganga and all sacred waters into it. If you are keeping an akhand jyot for the nine nights, light it now and keep it burning without interruption through Navami.

Invoke Maa Shailputri with her dhyan shloka from the Devi Mahatmyam, then her simple naman mantra.
विधिपूर्वक सोलह उपचार क्रम से अर्पित करें — आसन, पाद्य, अर्घ्य, स्नान, वस्त्र, गन्ध (चन्दन), पुष्प, धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य, आचमन, ताम्बूल, दक्षिणा, प्रदक्षिणा और पुष्पांजलि — पूर्ण श्रद्धा के साथ, परिवार सहित बैठकर पूजा करें।
Offer the standard sixteen upachar in sequence — aasan, paadya, arghya, snan, vastra, gandh (chandan), pushp, dhoop, deep, naivedya, aachman, tambul, dakshina, pradakshina and pushpanjali — with full shraddha, keeping the family seated together for the pooja.
आज माँ शैलपुत्री को शुद्ध देशी घी अर्पित किया जाता है — सादा या प्रसाद में मिलाकर अर्पित करें — परिवार के स्वास्थ्य हेतु शुभ।
Pure desi ghee is offered to Maa Shailputri today, offered plain or mixed into the day's prasad — associated with good health for the family.
दुर्गा आरती के साथ पूजा का समापन करें — आरती थाली परिवार में घुमाएं और घंटी बजाएं।
Conclude with the Durga aarti, passing the aarti thali through the family and ringing the bell.
