📖 Satyanarayan Katha — A Sacred Story of Truth & Grace
Satyanarayan Katha presents five divine stories (panch adhyaya) from the Skanda Purana revealing the glory of satya and the limitless grace of Bhagwan Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form. Listening with shraddha and devotion is itself a form of worship — it purifies the heart, fulfils sincere sankalps and brings peace, prosperity and spiritual upliftment to the entire family. All family members should be seated with full attention during katha; do not leave or converse while the katha is being recited.

📿 Step-by-Step Vidhi
Begin with the purpose of Satyanarayan Pooja and prepare the mind for devotion.
Light the deepak and incense before beginning. Remember — this pooja is not merely a ritual but a sankalp of satya, shraddha and kritagnyata. The family sits together with mobiles and distractions set aside.
On the priest's direction, take a small sip of water three times — each time with the corresponding mantra. This purifies speech, body and mind before the sacred ceremony begins.
Take water in the right hand and sprinkle it on yourself, family members and all pooja items while chanting. Remembering the Divine purifies all — internally and externally.
Brief pranayam to settle the mind. Chant the seven Vyahritis — invoking all realms of existence and bringing full stillness before the pooja proceeds.
Take water, akshat and a flower in the right hand. State your name, gotra, place, today's tithi and the purpose of this pooja — family welfare, peace, prosperity, a wish fulfilled or gratitude — then release the water into the thali.
Every auspicious ceremony begins with Vighnaharta Shri Ganesh Ji. Offer akshat, flowers and durva/pushp and naivedya to Lord Ganesha for an obstacle-free and blessed pooja.
Fill the Kalash with water, place akshat and supari/coin inside, lay mango or ashok leaves on top and set the coconut above. The Kalash holds Lord Vishnu at its mouth, Rudra at its neck, Brahma at its base and all holy rivers within its waters.
Invoke Lord Varun within the Kalash water — offer flowers and akshat to the divine guardian of sacred waters who blesses and sanctifies this ceremony.
Invoke auspiciousness, divine well-being and mangal for the home, family and pooja space. All family members join with folded hands and bow in pranam at the end.
Remember and invoke the nine grahas — Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu — offering akshat and flowers so the pooja proceeds under their peaceful blessing.
Remember and bow to the five principal deities — Ganesh, Vishnu, Shiv, Devi and Surya — with folded hands and complete devotion before the main worship begins.
Meditate on Lord Vishnu's divine form — serene, resting on Sheshnag, lotus-naveled, cloud-complexioned, adored by Lakshmi. Then formally invite Lord Satyanarayan into the pooja with flowers in hand.
Offer all sixteen upachar to Lord Satyanarayan in sequence — Avahan (invitation), Asana (seat), Padya (foot water), Arghya (welcome water), Achaman (sipping water), Snan/Abhishek (bath with panchamrit), Vastra (cloth), Yajnopavit (sacred thread), Gandh (chandan/kumkum), Akshat/Pushp/Tulsi, Dhoop (incense), Deep (lamp), Naivedya (bhog), Tambool (paan), Dakshina, Pradakshina-Namaskar.
Narad Ji asks Lord Vishnu how ordinary people can be freed from sorrow. The Lord reveals the Satyanarayan Vrat and its divine power. A poor Brahmin performs the vrat with full faith and his life transforms — poverty becomes prosperity through satya and shraddha. Ask your family to sit with devotion throughout the katha; do not get up or converse during the reading.
A poor Brahmin/woodcutter takes the vow in sincere devotion. Despite hardship, his faith transforms his life miraculously — the lesson is that shraddha and a devoted heart matter more than one's material circumstances.
Merchant Sadhu takes the vow but forgets and delays in fulfilling it. His negligence brings hardship to his family — a powerful reminder that once a sankalp is made to the Lord, it must be honoured with full sincerity and gratitude.
The merchant's family faces a divine test and the great importance of receiving Satyanarayan prasad with full reverence is revealed. Prasad is the Lord's direct blessing — it must never be dismissed or disrespected.
King Tungadhwaj's pride and forgetfulness bring suffering. Upon surrendering humbly to Lord Satyanarayan, he receives full grace — the katha concludes with the eternal teaching: abandon ahankar, follow satya and remain kritagnya before the Lord.
Perform the full aarti of Lord Satyanarayan/Vishnu with the entire family. Pass the aarti thali in order, ring the bell and chant with full devotion and gratitude.
