Namkaran Sanskar is one of the sixteen Shodasha Samskaras of Sanatan Dharma — the first formal social and spiritual rite of passage for a newborn. According to Manusmriti and the Grihyasutras, a child's name is not merely an identifier but the foundation of their personality, destiny and life-path — "the basis of longevity, glory, brilliance and strength." The child receives five types of names: Rashi Naam (birth moon sign), Nakshatra Naam (birth star), Dev Naam (deity name), Kula Naam (family lineage) and Vyavahaar Naam (daily name). The most sacred moment is when the father whispers the chosen name three times into the child's right ear — the first conscious gift of identity. This is followed by the formal Naam Ghoshana (declaration before family), Surya Darshan (first viewing of the sun — for tejas and longevity), Madhu-Ghrit Prashan (first taste of honey and ghee from gold, for sweet speech and wisdom) and the family's collective Ashirvad Samaroh.

📿 Step-by-Step Vidhi

Step 1 of 12
Griha Shuddhi & Punyahavachan

Sprinkle Gangajal to purify the home. Family declares the auspiciousness — all respond "Punyaham" together.

Step 2 of 12
Ganesh Pujan

Invoke Bhagwan Ganesha — Vighnharta — at the start of this first Sanskar of the child's life. Offer akshat, pushp and modak.

Step 3 of 12
Shashthi Devi / Matrika Pujan

Worship Shashthi Mata — the divine protector of newborns — invoking her blessings for the child's long life, health and glory.

Step 4 of 12
Kalash Sthapana

Establish the sacred Kalash and invoke the holy rivers and Varun Dev to bless this Sanskar with purity and divine grace.

Step 5 of 12
Sankalp (Pita)

The father holds jal, pushp and akshat in his left hand and takes the formal sankalp — stating his name, gotra, the child and purpose.

Step 6 of 12
Navgraha Pujan

Seek the blessings of all nine grahas for the child's entire life journey — health, prosperity, wisdom and an auspicious destiny.

Step 7 of 12
Hom / Havan

Father and mother together offer ahuti into the sacred fire — with the Mahamrityunjaya mantra — for the child's longevity and radiance.

Step 8 of 12
Naam Sankalp — Kaan Mein Naam

The most sacred moment — the father whispers the chosen name three times into the child's right ear, the first conscious gift of identity.

Step 9 of 12
Naam Ghoshana

The purohit formally declares the name three times before the assembled family — "Asya Shishor Naam (naam) Iti." Family responds "Bhavatu!"

Step 10 of 12
Surya Darshan

The father or grandfather carries the child outside and shows them the sun for the first time — praying for 100 years of life and radiant tejas.

Step 11 of 12
Madhu-Ghrit Prashan

The mother or grandmother touches the child's tongue with a gold ring or silver spoon dipped in honey and ghee — blessing vak, buddhi and maadhurya.

Step 12 of 12
Aarti & Ashirvad Samaroh

Family performs the child's aarti together. Then dada-dadi, nana-nani and all elders offer pushp-akshat and their heartfelt ashirvad.
