Mundan Sanskar — also known as Chudakarana or Chaulkarma — is one of the most tender and significant of the Shodasha Samskaras in Sanatan Dharma. The birth-hair a child carries from the womb is believed to hold traces of karma from previous lives; its sacred removal frees the child, sharpens intellect, strengthens the senses, and opens the door to a long, prosperous and spiritually awakened life. The ceremony begins with the father making the first three symbolic cuts with a small gold or silver scissors — right side, left side, then the back — while the priest chants the Pratham Kartan mantras from the Rigveda. The barber then performs the complete mundan, always leaving the Shikha (choti) at the crown — the sacred lock that protects the brahmarandhra, the seat of the sushumnadi energy. After mundan, the child's head is bathed with Gangajal, anointed with haldi, chandan and ghee, and the family gathers for the aarti and Ashirvad Samaroh. The cut hair is never discarded — it is offered to a sacred river, buried near a tulsi plant, or taken to a temple such as Tirupati.

📿 Step-by-Step Vidhi

Step 1 of 14
Punyahavachan

Purify the space and the moment with Gangajal — the priest declares the occasion holy and auspicious with three Punyaham calls.

Step 2 of 14
Ganesh Pujan

Invoke Vighnaharta Ganesha to bless the child and remove all obstacles from this first sacred rite of the new life.

Step 3 of 14
Matrika evam Navgraha Pujan

Worship the Matrika devis — the protective mother goddesses — and perform Navgraha Shanti for the child's lifelong health and wellbeing.

Step 4 of 14
Kalash Sthapana

Establish the water-kalash with mango leaves and coconut — invoking Varuna Deva as the divine witness of the ceremony.

Step 5 of 14
Sankalp

The father holds jal and pushp and takes the solemn sankalp — stating the child's name, gotra and the purpose: Ayurvardhan, Buddhivardhan and Shuddhi.

Step 6 of 14
Shishu Sthapana

The child is seated in the mother's or father's lap. The priest applies a tilak on the forehead — marking the sacred moment about to begin.

Step 7 of 14
Pratham Kartan — Pita Dwara

The father makes the first three cuts with a small gold or silver scissors — right side, left side, back — while the priest chants the Pratham Kartan mantra.

Step 8 of 14
Naai Dwara Mundan

The barber performs the complete mundan. The Shikha (choti) is left on the crown — the sacred lock that protects the brain's sushumnadi energy center.

Step 9 of 14
Shikha Sthapana

The priest chants the Shikha mantra as the choti is preserved — establishing the child's spiritual connection and protecting the brahmarandhra.

Step 10 of 14
Kesh Visarjan

The cut birth-hair is collected in a white cloth and offered to sacred water, buried near tulsi, or taken to a temple — never discarded in trash.

Step 11 of 14
Mastak Snan evam Anulepan

The child's head is washed with Gangajal. Then haldi paste, chandan and ghee are applied — cooling, purifying and nourishing the freshly shaved scalp.

Step 12 of 14
Aarti

The family gathers to perform the child's aarti together — the grandmother leads with the thaal while the priest chants the Ayushya Mantra for a hundred-year life.

Step 13 of 14
Ashirvad Samaroh

Every family member places flowers and akshat on the child's head and gives their blessings. The naai is honoured with dakshina, new clothes and gratitude.

Step 14 of 14
Kshama Prarthana

The ceremony closes with the universal kshama mantra — seeking forgiveness for any errors in ritual and dedicating the sanskar fully to the child's wellbeing.
